The semester is quickly winding down to a whirlwind close with deadlines hastily approaching , yet-to-be-completed projects looming large, and finals to be studied (or, in a hopefully limited number of cases, crammed) for. But, within a few short weeks, the summer shall be upon us bringing its own share of exciting experiences, whether it be internships across the nation, studying abroad in a different country, traveling and taking some time off from the grind, or staying on campus to take classes – again. Regardless of your plans, we at the Pioneer wish all of you the best of luck during these last couple of weeks and we offer you our sincerest encouragement to stay strong, stay diligent, and stay hungry for the fruit of the efforts you have put in thus far.
For the past month, the Pioneer staff has been busy assembling a new issue to close out the academic year. Featured in this issue, we have a trio of spotlights for your reading pleasure. The first is a Faculty Spotlight on our very own Dr. Ravi Bellamkonda sharing his final words on his time here at our department and what challenges and opportunities lies ahead for every biomedical engineer. The second is a Pre-Health Spotlight featuring Francisco Castelan, the new pre-health advisor for Georgia Tech. While at Tech, his long term vision for the pre-health program is to embed pre-health into other resources on campus and to make it available to people from all majors. The third article is Afterhours, featuring Kristen Laquidera – a prime example of an advisor that lives an abundant life in the afterhours. Though she claims her life is “pretty low-key,” her adventures suggest otherwise. Our other articles include: a look into three of our senior capstone projects; the graduate spotlight on Ilya Kolb who works in the Precision Biosystems Laboratory; a know-it-all-guide on Medtronic; a look into two of the popular lab courses BMED 3110 and BMED 3610, and a focus on BMES’ First Annual Networking Night.
