About Us

Pioneer is a monthly newsletter created by undergraduates and based in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory.

Founded Spring of 2007, Pioneer was originally distributed online and intended for members of the Georgia Tech BioMedical Engineering Society (BMES) group. Since then it has grown to cover biotechnology news, student and department events, outstanding professors, students, and alumni, and tips to help students succeed in the department.

Our Purpose

The primary purpose of the Pioneer is to create a channel of communication among the various portions of the Wallace H.Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University and the wider biotechnology community at Georgia Tech.

Our Reach

In the past academic year, over 3,000 hard copies of the newsletter were distributed in the form of monthly issues throughout the Georgia Tech Biotechnology Quad and thousands more via the Pioneer website and e-mail.

Our Content

Each issue of the Pioneer contains articles pertinent to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Regular sections include the Events and Deadlines, which lists opportunities, seminars and other relevant events, Faculty, Student and Alumni Spotlights, which highlight achievements and experiences of outstanding individuals in the department, Recent Publications, and Advising Columns, which are written by academic and professional advisors employed in Georgia Tech. Other articles come from a combination of the following categories: Impulses (Humans of BME), Senior Design Projects, Research Highlights, Event Coverage, and Classroom Explorations.
